The flickering fluorescent lights of the office seemed to pulse in time with Maya's hammering pulse. She drummed her fingers against the cold steel of her desk, her gaze fixed on the spreadsheet in front of her. Daniel, her best friend, had always told her he worked as a high-powered consultant. Tonight, at a company holiday party, she saw him serving drinks. The revelation had stolen the air from her lungs. She kept clearing her throat, the dry air scratching at it like sandpaper.

A wave of nausea washed over her. She excused herself from her colleagues and rushed to the restroom, splashing cold water on her face, trying to calm her racing thoughts.
